Akuna
Milly’s was contacted by a lovely couple who adored their cats. They were quite upset and panicked that one of their beautiful cats had gotten out and jumped the back fence and they couldn’t find him. Not sure how they found out about us, but straight away we said, sure we can advise and set something up to hopefully help locate him.
We had a small cat trap at the time and only one 4G camera, which was in use, but we were taking it down and knew we could set it up late that afternoon along with a trap.
We advised Akuna’s parents on when to look and what we needed to do. We told them our 4G camera, plus the trap could be set up in the yard of the house behind them, as they thought he could only have gotten over the fence at the back, which was quite tall. But since Akuna wasn’t used to being out, he had no idea how to get back and would have been quite scared.
We advised he probably hasn’t gone too far and would be hiding in a quiet safe place. His owners had searched and called already and had also spoken with the neighbours at the back , who were wonderful and had no hesitation in allowing us to set everything up at their place.
We asked Akuna’s owners to get a piece of clothing with their scent on it as well as Akuna’s bedding and his favourite food, plus some smelly food.
Things didn’t go quite to plan that day, but eventually we got the camera and trap to the location and met Akuna’s owners, who were out searching under everything quietly and calling Akuna. It was early evening and dark.
We also said to bring Akuna’s dirty kitty litter box. Now this could do one of two things. It could help Akuna or it might attract other roaming or stray cats, which could scare Akuna away further.
So we set everything up and put their phone number in the 4G camera as well as our own. We helped search for a bit as it was quiet. We all thought we could hear a very quiet meow.
We asked if one of them was going to be able to wake up if they hear a notification on their phone? To make sure their phone’s volume was turned up high.
We also suggested going out much later at night and quietly searching and listening again.
At approximately a bit before 2am, a text notification came through our phones and Akuna’s owner’s phone with a still image of ……….AKUNA, next to the cage.
They raced around to the camera and who should be there, but Akuna sitting with the cage and all his things. He didn’t go in the cage. But he could smell the food and the bedding and owner’s clothes.
I will include the photo text notification the owners received which alerted them to Akuna being at the trap.
Message from Owners after they had Akuna back home in their arms 2.15am:-

This couple were beautiful, so gentle and they truly loved their pets, and thanks to them and other family members, we were able to replace our broken trail camera that had been vandalised elsewhere and we were able to purchase another 4G camera.
Also below are two videos edited into one media video, from our 4G camera that night.
